Father Figure is a modern industrial design project that functions both as a sculptural home decor object and a tool for emotional augmentation during private, at-home sessions. It merges the brutalist language of steel, glass, and material weight with the intimate sensibilities of light and sound, reimagining the traditional lamp as an ambient therapeutic interface. By transforming the domestic space into a site for self-regulation and emotional healing, Father Figure invites a new relationship between everyday objects and inner states. At its core lies a custom-built PCB embedded with an Electrodermal Activity (EDA) sensor, which detects subtle fluctuations in the user’s skin conductance—an indicator of stress, arousal, or emotional intensity. These biometric signals inform the lamp’s reactive system, modulating binaural audio pulses and therapeutic lighting sequences in real time. As the user engages with the piece, it gently mirrors and modulates their emotional state, creating a feedback loop for self-regulation and nervous system recalibration. Anchored in a brutalist yet intimate design language—raw materials, minimalist geometry, and quiet illumination—Father Figure acts as a ritual object. It invokes the symbolic and sensory qualities of paternal presence: grounding, distant, protective, and sometimes absent. In doing so, it invites the user to explore themes of vulnerability, attachment, and resilience in solitude. More than a lamp, Father Figure is an affective interface for healing—quietly tuning into the body's signals and transforming them into a luminous, auditory language of care.
